Bream Head stands sentinel over the entrance to the Whangarei Harbour and the area contains some of NZs most outstanding coastal scenery and walks.
Bream Head (Te Whara) Track
(5-6 Hours one way)
Starting at Urquharts Bay carpark and climbing steeply to Mt Lion (Maturiki) through to Bream Head (Te Whara) and on to Ocean Beach this is a truly spectacular coastal walk. A magnificent coastal panorama takes in Cape Brett/Piercy Is (Motukokako) in the north to Cape Rodney (Tawharanui) in the south. This undulating 7.5km track requires a good level of fitness.
Peach Cove Track
(2.5-3 Hours return)
This route crosses the Bream Head Track and begins 1km before Ocean Beach. A 50 min walk takes you across pasture and kanuka scrub and into broad leaf forest as you climb steeply to cross the Bream Head Track. Then descend into Peach Cove where there is a basic hut.
Home Point/Busby Head Loop Track
(1.5 Hours loop)
Starting at Urquharts Bay car park this easy track takes you to the superb views and entrance of the Whangarei Harbour. Take a picnic and enjoy with a swim at magical Smugglers Bay.
Mount Manaia Track
(2 hours return)
Featuring unique towering castle like peaks at 420mtrs this iconic track offers an outstanding 360 degree vista. Revered by Maori this recently upgraded track has beautiful bush features and spectacular views en route to the summit.
Mt Aubrey Track
(1.5 Hours return)
Superb views enjoyed from this track with well formed paths and stairs. Can be completed in a loop taking in the Marine Reserve at Reotahi and the remnants of the 1911 freezing works.
Motukiore Island
(2 Hours return)
In the middle of Parua Bay this DOC reserve can be accessed off Whangarei Heads Rd by the Pines Golf Club. An easy foreshore walk from half tide takes you to a well preserved pa site with spectacular harbour views. This is a low-tide only route.
Te Ara Roa Walkway.
Te Ara Roa (The long pathway) is a 3000 km walkway that runs the length of NZ, from North Cape to The Bluff. This walkway runs through Whangarei Heads from Taiharuru Estuary, Kauri Mountain ridge and reserve, Ocean Beach and Bream Head ridge, crossing the Whangarei Harbour from the Stuart Road wharf in McLeod Bay.
